My Kim Kardashian Shoe Dazzle Impression!

Ugh! I am having one heck of a time with my videos for some reason! I made this video several days ago, but Windows Movie Maker would continuously lock up every time I tried to edit and finalize it! So, I tried a different program that has distorted the video and made it rather grainy-looking, and I have an HD video camera! Go figure!
But, I was finally able to upload my video on my first Shoe Dazzle experience! I love, love, love my shoes and was so happy with my selection! They fit well and, aside from needing scuffing on the soles of the shoes to keep me from busting my butt, they are near perfect! I can't wait to show you guys the shoes I picked out for the month of March - they are just as awesome. A little edgier than the red heels, but so gorgeous!

Hello, lovelies! I did an updated makeup collection and storage video. My last one was a little dated and my storage was in need of an overhaul as well. It's still not exactly the way I would like for it to be, but it's better than before! I have a vision of how I want my "makeup room" to look like and I can't find what I want to make it look that way! Maybe you all will get to see my baby steps to get to the grand finale! :)

Oh, and in even bigger news (drum roll, please) I got my shoedazzle shoes in today! They are ridiculously gorgeous! I will try to make a video review for that tomorrow. I wore this look the other night for a girls' night out and I really liked it, but I didn't take any pictures - don't ask me why! So, I recreated it and actually made a video (my first in quite a while!). Please ignore the watermark - I am using a trial version of the editing software and I can't get rid of it! My Winter Skin Saver!!!

Ok, I will admit that for years I didn't adhere to the changing of the skin moisturizer based on the seasons. I usually just stuck with whatever was working for me at the time. However, this winter season has wreaked havoc on my skin. I was having dry patches in the strangest places - above my top lip, the bridge of my nose, the middle of my cheek. Just really weird places for me. So, I finally caved in and headed to my trusty Target, where I found this - TA DA!

My apologies on the blurry picture - I didn't notice until after I uploaded! Anyway, I love my Oil of Olay Age Defining Daily Renewal Cream! This little gem contains a beta hydroxy complex that works as an exfoliant (you would never know it because it is so gentle - I can't feel a thing!) then gives your skin the most amazing moisture surge. It truly is unbelievable! Honestly, after 2 days of using this, my crazy dry patches went away and my skin feels incredibly soft and supple!

Check this out! Not overly thick and heavy. Perfectly rich and creamy!

I am constantly running my hands over my cheeks now! It contains a light fresh scent that is not overpowering and just smells clean. This is one product that I can see forever being in my winter arsenal. If you battle dry skin in the winter, definitely check this stuff out!

Prayers for Haiti

I really don't have any words to say about the earthquake that devastated Haiti earlier this week that hasn't already been said. My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones, to those who were injured, to those still missing. They say pictures are worth a thousand words - I hope these pictures will send thousands of prayers because the Haitians need them.

It's beautiful to see that even with the devastation facing them, the people of Haiti are turning to their faith in God to see them through. Our precious Lord.

Of course the power of prayer can obviously work miracles, but these people need all we can give. They are without food, water, shelter - all basic necesssities. Please visit this website to see how you can help.

"Oooooh, That Smell"

Hello, lovelies!

While I'm not the biggest perfume chick in the world - not because I don't believe in smelling nice. They just don't like me. It can smell wonderful in the bottle, but once I put it on, apparently my body chemistry messes it all up and it smells like poo! Not really like poo, but you know what I mean! :)

Anyway! While I'm not the biggest perfume chick in the world, I am very excited about the release of Kim Kardashian's new perfume next month! As you all probably know by now, I love that girl! Anything and everything about her - it's more like an obsession, really! But minus the stalker tendencies!

The perfume is already up on the Sephora website. It comes in 3.4 oz, 1.7 oz, 1 oz, and the rollerball. Prices range from $65-$16, respectively. Although the release date isn't until next month, it looks as though you can already purchase it through the website. Or maybe you can preorder and it will ship next month. Not quite sure on that one!

Great Skin In Less Than a Minute!

I picked up the February 2010 issue of Glamour magazine this weekend. Katy Perry is on the cover - and just how freaking gorgeous is she?!?! Anyway, I found an article in there with tips on facial cleansing that I wanted to share with y'all! It helped me and I hope it helps you all as well!!

Step 1 - Exactly How to Wash Your Face:
1. Use warm water. "Cold closes your pores, so your cleanser can't work and hot water is too stripping." Hands get the job done, but a sponge feels good. Try ricky Care Sea Sponge ($5. rickysnyc.com)
2. Pick a good cleanser. "Don't worry about whether it's a gel, lotion or bar. It's the ingredients that matter." If your skin is oily or acne-prone, look for one with blemish-busting salicylic acid. Dry skin? A wash with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter works best.
3. Rub in on: rinse it off. Work cleanser onto skin for about 15 seconds - any longer is overkill. Then splash your face with water at least six times to completely rinse.
Recommended products:
1. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Redness Soothing Facial Cleanser (for the greasies) ($7 at drugstores)
2. Clarins Gentle Beauty Soap (cleans and moisturizes) ($15, clarinsusa.com)
3. L'Oreal Paris Go 360 Clean Deep Cream Cleanser (comes with a cool tool for scrubbing) ($7 at drugstores)
4. Clarins The Brush. Use on bar soap for some serious lather. ($19, clarinsusa.com)

Step 2 - Exactly How to Moisturize
There's no big trick for applying face cream - experts agree you can just slap it on. But choosing the perfect formula is essential. The rules:
1. Oily skin needs lotion too. Seems odd, but oil production has nothing to do with skin's hydration level!
2. Feeling tight? Go rich!! IF your skin seems dry or tight postcleaning, opt for creams that contain humectants, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture to the skin.
3. Get a multitasker. Whoever decided to add SPF to moisturizer was a genius! You're able to soften and protect skin from sun damage in one step. Pick one with anti-agers to fight lines, too.

1. Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Oil-Free Moisturizer With Mimosa ($45, origins.com)
2. Estee Lauder Hydrationist Maximum Moisture Creme ($38, esteelauder.com)

Wow, is it me or does "two thousand, ten" or "twenty-ten" just not sound right? How in the world could another year have flown by so quickly? Crazy!

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season, whatever you celebrate, be it Christmas or whatever! Santa was nice and brought me an i-touch. I was extremely excited! My cell phone service provider isn't AT&T, otherwise I would have asked good ol Santa Baby for an i-phone. But I was overjoyed with my i-touch. Now all I need is someone to explain to me why I have to have some password to log in when I am supposed to have free wi-fi! I consider myself pretty saavy with the techno stuff, but this one is beyond me! I was so frustrated at my local Starbucks that I caved and paid for a year subscription to AT&T's wireless internet just so I could log on and download apps there, since that is my favorite "hang out" place!
Anyway, I will admit, I am one of those who will make a huge slew of resolutions, feel completely overwhelmed by all the promises I made, and end up breaking all of them by January 15th. Yes, I'm a failure! So to save myself the stress of it all, I made myself a simple resolution for the new year - "just be a better person than last year." Nothing fancy or detailed. Just short, sweet and to the point. So far, since this is only the second day of the new year, I've actually done quite well! LOL!! Part of the "bettering myself" is to work a little bit harder on this blog. I enjoy this so much and am so thankful to all of you who read it, I want to do more to make it more enjoyable for you all! So, any ideas for postings that you guys want to see, please feel free to send them to me! I'm all for it!!

NYX and Eyelashes Haul!

Ok, so I hit up the local beauty supply store the other day. It's not a place that I check out on a regular basis because it's generally a so-so kind of store. But on that particular shopping trip, I racked up!

I was so excited to find these Candy Glitter Liners! I love my similar glitter liners from Urban Decay as well as those that came out with MAC's Hello Kitty line, so I grabbed these beauties up!

And a swatch of each one for you! Are they not beautiful? I love all three! I can't wait to play with them!

Next, I picked up a couple of single shadows. White Pearl, Frosted Flakes, Purple, and Black Sparkle.

As far as inexpensive makeup goes, I love the payoff of NYX! Frosted Flakes is one of my faves - a simple pretty champagne/nudish color. Check out the swatches:

Next, I picked up a lipgloss (in Beige), a jumbo eye pencil (in Milk), and these adorable pigments (Ultra Pearl Manias) that were only $1.50! Those are the only items that I remember the price of! They are so cute and little, but there is tons of color concentrated in those bottles! The colors I got are Mocha Pearl, Silver Pearl, Black Pearl.

And of course, swatches! I love the lippie! And I think the Ultra Pearl Manias will work well for the fall!

Now, check this out! This Glitter Cream Pallet is unreal! I love the gorgeous fall colors and what girl can resist glitter?

Next up are my faves - LASHES!!!! Even though the packaging says Ever Lash, I believe they are another version of Red Cherry. I compared the numbers on each of the lashes and they are identical to Red Cherry. Anyone know why they do this? How many alternate names does that make? Creme, Bliss, Ever Lash....?

The only thing I forgot to include separate pictures of was the eyeshadow trio in Ceramic. Gorgeous smokey colors with a touch of sparkle. Love it!

Best of the best from Fashion Week Spring 2010

I believe I would have cut off any appendage necessary to have been able to attend Fashion Week in New York last week. I mean, the styles were absolutely beautiful! Such a huge diversity of colors, prints, fabrics! Apparently anything goes for next spring!

Here's a few of my faves:

Arise: African Promise Collection

This dress is to die for! I love the colors. But what I love most is the top portion of the dress. Even though the model is not well endowed, this style would also work well for those of us who are a little more blessed up top. Maxi dresses and I did not get along well this summer for that reason - I felt like I was exposing more than I was covering! Ugh!

BCBG Max Azria

What I would give for those shoes! I love the overall look of this design! Very light yet the contrast of solid with the bold print gives it an awesome edgy look! Awesome!

Milly by Michelle Smith

I love the chic casual look of this design - aside from the "thingie" on her head! LOL! I can picture stores like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe carrying comparable items in their stores.

Monarchy Collection

There is nothing that I do not love about this one! Love the bow on the skirt, the flowy lightweight material of the shirt, the absolutely stunning shoes. This design takes the look of neutrals and kicks it up a bit!

But out of all the amazing designs from some truly incredible designers, I think Diane von Furstenberg really stole the whole week's worth of talent! Love, love, love every single one of her designs! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves!

Polish of the Week: OPI Black Cherry Chutney

Hi, there! Hope you all had a great weekend! Sorry for the lack of updates last week - I just started a new job and last week was full of orientation and such! And this week's polish is not going to be the prettiest sample! I actually JUST put it on so that I would have an update for you. I am currently wearing it on my toes, but I have such a foot anti-fetish that I will never take pictures of my feet to show them to you! So I threw it on my fingernails for you!

This week's color is OPI's Black Cherry Chutney. Seriously, this color is to die for! It's a deep raspberry plum (like a reddish-black) color that is just gorgeous and perfect for the fall! It's from the India collection (which included some absolutely amazing colors!) and I consider it a must-have for this coming fall/winter season!

I'm Back & Polish of the Week: OPI You Don't Know Jacques

Hi, everyone! I know, it's been forever! But I just got my computer back! I've been without it for about three weeks and I felt like I was going to die - I'm a little too attached to this thing! :)

This week's nail polish color is one you might remember from my haul post I wasn't initially thrilled with the color, but guess what? - I love it!!! It might be one of my new favorite fall polishes. It's a creamy grayish-taupe color, and has great coverage. Just your two coats and you're ready to go! This isn't the matte color that OPI recently came out with, though. It's from their fall collection last year - La Collection de France, I believe. I'm dying to try out their matte colors, but I'm having a hard time trying to find them locally! I'm cheap and don't like to pay for shipping when I can drive to find what I'm looking for! What do you guys think?

Unlike last week's color, Turned Up Turquoise, this is a richer color with great coverage! Two coats and you're done with no sheerness to it at all!

Polish Of The Week: Turned Up Turquoise by China Glaze

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! I'm experiencing some computer issues at the moment (aka crashing!) so I'm doing updates from work - Shhhhh! I don't know if I will be able to get an update scheduled for every day this week (I should be getting my computer back sometime this weekend), but I'll do what I can!

Ok, so my polish of the week is one of my faves - especially for the summer! It's called "Turned Up Turquoise" by China Glaze. This color is gorgeous, the pictures can't do it justice. I would say it's more on the green side so I wouldn't exactly call this color turquoise but almost like a mermaid green color. Does that make any sense? :) This color dries super fast, probably because it's a more sheer color, which leads me to my only issue with this particular color - you need a really good base coat and at least two layers of this polish. You can probably see the white from my french manicure trying to shine through the color! I put on two coats - shoulda gone with three! But it is such a gorgeous color! Definitely check it out!

Ok, I will be the first to admit that I have a near obsession with Kim Kardashian. I literally am on her website every day! She is just out of this world gorgeous. She's incredibly sexy with her curves and is proud of them - which I love! Plus her sense of style just rocks.

I don't know if anyone has seen it yet, but she decided to go blonde recently! Yes, her jet black hair is now blonde...for real! Not quite sure if I truly love it or not, but there is not denying the fact that she is beautiful enough to pull it off. While I feel her black hair made her a bit more unique in a blonde-set Hollywood, the color still compliments her skin tone.

Happy Friday, beauties! Do any of you have big plans for the weekend? Unfortunately, mine will be like every other weekend - work! Fortunately, I am lucky enough to work with some pretty amazing people and I love my job, so it's not that bad!

Facial Scrub Recipe and At-Home Chemical Peel Recipes.

Good morning, beauties!

Prior to discovering this facial scrub recipes, there was not a single exfoliator that I could use! Every single thing I tried either dried my skin terribly or broke me out! So, I resorted to using a facial sponge and my facial cleanser. However, I have now found the most incredible exfoliator ever - it is so gentle and I cannot tell you just how wonderful my face feels afterwards! I use this as part of my evening routine. This recipe makes enough for 5-7 days - I just keep it in a sealed container:

1/4 cup oatmeal (grounded by my food processor) - yes, I'm a firm believer in the power of oatmeal!!!
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup mineral water (I like Perrier lemon sparkling mineral water)

*Mix all together and gently scrub in circular motions over your face for 1-2 minutes.

Now, if you've been following my blog this week, perhaps you've noticed how everything is tying in together! On Monday, I boasted the benefits of vitamins and minerals for the skin. I hopefully explained how amazing they are when included in your diet. Now, in this recipe, you will further benefit! It's recommended to avoid using tap water because the salts and calcium in it can dry your skin. Mineral water is believed to be better because its high silica content strengthens the spongy cells in between collagen and elastin fibres and plumps the skin. The lemon in this particular brand of mineral water brightens your skin and helps to fade any sun spots or uneven pigmentation. (*LOVE*)

Now, as promised, more information about light chemical peels!

Light chemical peels contain alpha hydroxy acids and/or beta hydroxy acids.
Chemical peels primarily containing alpha hydroxy acids may be referred to as “AHA chemical peels” or “ glycolic acid peels.” Glycolic acid is the most common type of alpha hydroxy acid used in skin care. Salicylic acid chemical peels are the most common type of beta hydroxy acid peel.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are derived from fruit, sugar, sour milk, and other natural sources. AHA chemical peels often contain:

Glycolic acid (extracted from sugar cane)
Lactic acid (extracted from milk)
Malic acid (extracted from pears and apples)
Citric acid (extracted from oranges and lemons)
Tartaric acid (extracted from grapes)
Beta hydroxy acids are simple organic acids derived from fruit. When a physician refers to “ salicylic acid chemical peels,” he or she is referring to a beta hydroxy acid. Though closely related to alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids differ slightly in their molecular structure, and rejuvenate the skin in a slightly different way.

The most common beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, has been used for decades as an acne remedy, and salicylic acid chemical peels are especially effective in eliminating acne. Beta hydroxy acids are helpful because they can exfoliate oily skin and deeply penetrate the skin with no irritation.

Regardless of the specific type, alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids gently rejuvenate the skin and encourage skin cell regeneration with little or no irritation or discomfort. Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, and other alpha hydroxy acids are so gentle, in fact, that they are common ingredients in home skin care products, and patients who undergo a light chemical peel may be asked to use such products to improve on their results.

A few at home recipes:

Alpha Hydroxy Skin Peel Recipe
Note: when using this peel for the first time, keep on the skin for only 1-2 minutes to make sure there is no skin irritation.

Ingredients: 1 cup fresh pineapple; half-a-cup fresh papaya; 2 tablespoons honey.

Preparation: Puree pineapple and papaya in a blender. Add honey and mix thoroughly.

Usage: Wash your face, and then apply the mixture to your skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for no more than 5 minutes (less if you have sensitive skin), then rinse with cool water. When done, apply a moisturizer. Don't use more than once a week.

More ingredients that can be used as remedies:

Malic acid: Apples, vinegar, applesauce, cider.
Lactic acid: Buttermilk, yogurt, powdered skim milk, sour cream, blackberries, tomatoes
Tartaric Acid: Grapes, grape juice, wine, cream of tartar
Citric Acid: Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, grapefruit, and orange
Glycolic acid: Sugar cane

All you need is about one half a teaspoon of liquid per face cleansing. You can freshly squeeze the juice of one lemon, for example, and refrigerate the leftovers for the rest of the week. Just dab some of the juice onto your fingers and pat on your face. Leave on for 10 minutes or so before rinsing. If you are in a rush, just cut a grape or strawberry in half-whatever you happen to have on hand-and rub it over your skin; let the juice set for a few minutes, and then rinse.

Additional Recipes containing Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Yogurt & Oatmeal mask
Ingredients: 2 tbsp. plain yogurt; 1 tbsp. oatmeal; 1 tbsp honey

Preparation: Simply mix ingredients together to form a paste. To avoid clumps, you may grind oatmeal into a powder before mixing it with other ingredients.

Usage: Wash your face. Massage face with the paste in a circular motion. Keep on for a minute or two then rinse off

Yogurt and aloe healing mask
Ingredients: 1/2 cup plain yogurt; 2 tbsp aloe gel (or a fresh aloe leaf)

Preparation: Simply mix ingredients together to form a paste. (Aloe gel can be purchased in a health food store. Alternatively, you can take a fresh aloe leaf, remove the skin and mash the pulp.

Usage: Wash your face. Massage face with the paste in a circular motion. Keep on for a minute or two then rinse off

My Personal Favorite!!!
500 mg tablet of Vitamin C (pulverized to a powder)
2 Tbsp. honey
(Yes, that's all!!!)

Place the vitamin C powder in a small cup or bowl, add the honey, and stir until completely blended. Apply to your face, Use all of the honey mixture for one application. Keep this on your face no more than 10 minutes. Then rinse your face with cool water. Apply a moisturizer afterward.

To Peel or Not To Peel.....?

Hi, lovelies! To continue my week-long discussion on facial care, I'm focusing today on chemical peels.

A chemical peel is a procedure in which a chemical agent is applied to the skin, with certain types causing the skin to "blister" and peel off. You are literally removing your top layer of skin. It is used to reduce fine lines, treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging or hereditary factors, improve the appearance of mild scarring, treat certain types of acne, reduce age spots, freckles or dark patches due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills, or to improve the look and texture of dull skin. There are several different types of chemical peels:

Light - Also known as glycolic acid peels or AHA chemical peels, a light chemical peel is a non-invasive treatment that removes the upper layers of dead and damaged skin and encourages skin cell regeneration. This type of peel provides gentle treatment for fine lines, acne, chronic dry skin, and uneven pigmentation. This type of peel will cause a slight pinkness afterward, but normal coloring returns in a few hours. You can find do it yourself chemical peels in stores and online, such as Neutrogena and Avon. You can also find at home recipes to do at home and save even more money! Check back tomorrow for recipes that I have used and recommend!

Medium - Medium chemical peels, also known as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) chemical peels, provide more dramatic results than light chemical peels, and they don't require the extended recovery time of deep (phenol) peels. Medium chemical peels are an effective way to correct acne scars, address uneven pigmentation, improve the texture and tone of the skin, smooth out fine lines, and more. After TCA chemical peels, a superficial crust forms over the treated area, then flakes off in three to seven days. The newly revealed skin may initially appear reddish, but the discoloration will fully fade within a week to reveal skin with dramatically improved texture, color, and overall appearance. Healing time takes approximately two weeks.

Deep - Phenol chemical peels are the most aggressive type of skin peels. A phenol peel is an effective remedy for severely sun damaged skin, coarse wrinkles, scars, and even pre-cancerous growths. They penetrate the skin deeper than AHA peels or TCA peels to address more serious imperfections such as blotchiness, coarse wrinkles, and acne scars. Compared to light chemical peels and medium chemical peels, deep chemical peels have more dramatic results, and only a single treatment is required. However, deep (phenol) chemical peel recovery is lengthy and uncomfortable compared to milder chemical peels. Phenol peels are so powerful that only one treatment is necessary to achieve dramatic results that last for years. Because the procedure typically results in pronounced swelling, patients are advised to allow for at least a week of at-home recovery after undergoing a deep chemical peel. After an advanced chemical peel, the patient’s face will be swollen, red, and uncomfortable. A crust will form on the treated skin several days after treatment. Within seven to ten days, this crust will flake off to reveal a new layer of bright pink skin. After two to three months, this bright pink color will fade to a pale, smooth complexion.

Now, keep in mind that these procedures are not without risks or side effects. Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have with your doctor! While I've never tried a medium or deep chemical peel, I'm definitely not opposed to them. However, I also feel that these types of peels can perhaps be avoided if you maintain a good skin care routine and religiously use SPF! Not enough can be said about prevention! But I think it's good to know that we have options when life sometimes deals us a different hand!

Getting Gorgeous Skin From The Inside, Part 2

Good morning, beauties! To pick up where I left off yesterday, I wanted to go a little further into the discussion of the importance of vitamins & minerals and the skin benefits that they provide! Today, I'm going to dive into the "How much do I need?" and the "Where can I get them?", as well as a little extra side information. Please keep in mind that this info is just a guide. It cannot be used to treat or diagnose. If you have any questions regarding your health, please be sure to see your physician!

Vitamin C

How much do I need? - approximately 60 mg

Where can I get it? - Citrus fruits (lime, lemon, orange, grapefruit), papaya, broccoli, brussel sprouts, strawberries, cauliflower, spinach, and cantaloupe

Signs of too little? - Anemia, sore gums, joint pain, nose bleeds, nausea.

Signs of too much? - Nausea, diarrhea, and cramps. Extremely high doses can interfere with white blood cells ability to kill bacteria. High doses can cause scurvy (condition characterized by general weakness, anemia , gum disease (gingivitis), and skin hemorrhages ).

Vitamin E

How much do I need? - approximately 15 mg

Where can I get it? -Vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, nuts, fortified cereals, egg yolk, olives, and sunflower seeds

Signs of too little? - Anemia, swelling

Signs of too much? - Fatigue, muscle weakness, nausea, and skin disorders

Vitamin A

How much do I need? - approximately 4000 I.U.

Where can I get it? - Carrots, broccoli, squash, spinach, kale, and sweet potatoes, fortified milk, butter, cheese, eggs, and liver

Signs of too little? - Night blindness, diarrhea, abnormalities of skin and bone development

Signs of too much? - Joint pain, skin rashes, severe headaches, constipation. Can stop menstruation

Vitamin K

How much do I need? - approximately 60-80 mcg

Where can I get it? - Leafy, green vegetables, cauliflower, cabbage, and soybeans

Signs of too little? - Increases likelihood of bruising and bleeding

Signs of too much? - Can interfere with some anti-clotting medications. Can cause liver problems

Selenium

How much do I need? - approximately 55 mcg

Where can I get it? - Beef, poultry (especially organ meats), brown rice, and whole grains

Signs of too little? - Muscle weakness, and fatigue

Signs of too much? - Fatigue, skin sores, hair loss, dizziness, nausea, and anxiety.

Copper

How much do I need? - 2 mg

Where can I get it? - Shellfish, nuts, seeds, liver, kidneys, and legumes

Signs of too little? - May cause high blood pressure, fatigue, diabetes, anemia, fragile bones, and can increase the risk of heart attack.

Signs of too much? - Stomachache, nausea, muscle pain

Zinc

How much do I need? - approximately 12-15 mg

Where can I get it? - Beef, pork, poultry, seafood, grains, and bran

What about B-complex?

B-Complex actually refers to a collection of 8 B vitamins: thiamin(B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), cobalamine (B12), folic acid (B9) , pantothenic acid (B5) and biotin. Now, if your head is spinning as much as mine was when I was going through all of this information, you can do as I do - try to eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of water, take a multi-vitamin, and call it a day! I just like knowing that I am a little more informed of the importance of what I put in my body!

Getting Gorgeous Skin From The Inside, Part I

Happy Monday lovelies! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, as well as a good week last week! My trip to the beach was extremely relaxing and I was not exactly eager to return to normal life! What is it about vacations that just leave you wanting more? Ahh, yes - the escape! :) During my trip, I stopped by the nail salon and had a french manicure done, so no Nail Polish of the Week this week. I would show you the Strawberry Margarita OPI polish I have on my toes, but feet disgust me and I just would not do that to you guys! And now, as summer is coming to an end, I wanted to spend some time discussing skin care and perhaps reversing some of the damage that's been done while basking in the heat of the summer sun - and, yes, I fall victim to that as well! So, let's talk skin care!

Just like the rest of you, I'm all about searching for the perfect facial wash, skin cream or lotion, etc. that will give me the flawless complexion that every product claims to offer. I have what I like to call "moody" skin - some products will work wonders, some will do more damage, and some will work for a while then stop. The one thing that remains consistent in helping my skin is what I put into my body, not always what I put on it.

In addition to the mantra of 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, there are important nutrients that feed your skin and keep it looking its best:

Vitamin C - Vitamin C has been shown to counter the effects of sun exposure. It works by reducing the damage caused by free radicals, a harmful byproduct of sunlight, smoke, and pollution. Free radicals destroy collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and other signs of aging. Defnitely not what we want to see any earlier than we have to! Include in your diet plenty of vitamin-C rich foods (citrus and vegetables, among others), which can replace the loss of the vitamin through the skin. You can also take vitamin C supplements, up to 500 to 1,000 milligrams of per day. Combined with vitamin E (see below), vitamin C supplements can also protect skin from sun exposure.
You can also try a topical vitamin C cream to encourage collagen production. Use a formula containing the L-ascorbic acid form of vitamin C, the only one that can penetrate skin layers and do the job.

Vitamin E - Like vitamin C, this potent antioxidant helps reduce the harmful effects of the sun on the skin. Taking 400 units of vitamin E daily appeared to reduce the risk of sun damage to cells as well as reduce the production of cancer-causing cells. Some studies show that when vitamins E and A are taken together, people show a 70% reduction in basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.
Vitamin E can also help reduce wrinkles and make your skin look and feel smoother. (Be aware, though, that some recent research warns that large doses of vitamin E can be harmful. Stay with 400 international units per day or less to be on the safe side.) Used in a cream, lotion, or serum form, vitamin E can soothe dry, rough skin. I have personally found it useful on scars! I will open a capsule and rub the oil on a fresh wound and it decreases the scarring tremendously!

Vitamin A - Vitamin A is necessary for the maintenance and repair of skin tissue. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamin A, so if you keep an adequate intake, adding more won't do much. But, if your level drops just slightly below normal, you could see a drier, flakier complexion. Yuck!
Topical vitamin A is the form that makes a real difference in your skin. Medical studies show a reduction in lines and wrinkles, good acne control, and some psoriasis relief, all from using creams containing this nutrient. The prescription treatment is called Retin A, and it's used primarily as a treatment for acne. The less potent, over-the-counter formulations are sold as retinols and used as anti-aging treatments. Good stuff!

Vitamin B complex - When it comes to skin, the single most important B vitamin is biotin, a nutrient that forms the basis of skin, nail, and hair cells. Without adequate amounts, you may end up with dermatitis (an itchy, scaly skin reaction - something that I have, but not related to vitamin B levels) or sometimes even hair loss. Even a mild deficiency causes symptoms. Your body makes plenty of biotin, and the nutrient is also in many foods, including bananas, eggs, oatmeal (the wonderfood, in my opinion!), and rice (preferably brown).
Creams containing B vitamins can give skin an almost instant healthy glow while hydrating cells and increasing overall tone at the same time. Niacin, a specific B vitamin, helps skin retain moisture, so your complexion looks more plump and younger looking. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe dry, irritated skin. In higher concentrations it can work as a lightening agent to even out blotchy skin tone.

Vitamin K - As the nutrient responsible for helping blood clot, it won't do much for your skin from the inside. But studies show topical vitamin K does work well to reduce under eye circles as well as bruises. (Am I hearing cheers out there?) When combined with vitamin A in a cream or serum, vitamin K can be even more effective for those dark circles.

Selenium - Scientists believe this mineral plays a key role in skin cancer prevention. Taken in supplement form or in a cream, it protects skin from sun damage. If you do spend any time in the sun, selenium could reduce your chance of burning, lowering your risk of skin cancer. The best dietary sources of selenium include whole-grain cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs.

Copper - Together with vitamin C and the mineral zinc, copper helps to develop elastin. While a copper deficiency is rare (doctors caution that supplements can be dangerous), topical applications of copper-rich creams can firm the skin and help restore some elasticity, according to some study results.

Zinc - Very important for those who are acne prone. In fact, sometimes acne itself is a symptom of a zinc deficiency. Taken internally or used topically, zinc works to clear skin by taming oil production and may be effective in controlling the formation of acne lesions or help those already on your skin to clear sooner. Food sources of zinc include oysters, lean meat, and poultry.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid - A powerful antioxidant, hundreds of times more potent that either vitamin C or E, alpha-lipoic acid may turn out to be a super boost for aging skin. It has an amazing ability to penetrate both oil and water, affecting skin cells from both the inside and the outside of the body. Most other antioxidants can do one but not both. Pretty cool, huh? Like vitamins C and E, it neutralizes skin cell damage caused by free radicals. Some studies show it can repair the damage to skin's DNA, thus reducing the risk of cancer. Health experts say it also helps other vitamins work more effectively to rebuild skin cells damaged by environmental assaults, such as smoke and pollution. You can take a daily alpha-lipoic acid supplement or use creams that contain the antioxidant.

DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) - Another powerful antioxidant, this nutrient has one of the strongest appetites for free radicals. It works mostly by deactivating their power to harm skin cells. It also helps stabilize the membrane around the outside of each cell so that assaults from sun damage and cigarette smoke are reduced.
It also prevents the formation of lipofucsin, the brown pigment that becomes the basis for age spots. As with alpha-lipoic acid, you can take DMAE in supplements and in topical creams.

Hyaluronic Acid - Made by the body, this nutrient's main job is to lubricate joints so that knees, elbows, fingers, and toes all move smoothly and easily. But now doctors say it also plays a role with skin cells, acting as a kind of glue that helps hold them together, keeping skin looking smoother and younger. Another plus is its ability to hold water, up to 1,000 times its weight, which means more moisture in each skin cell.
Top skin care lines now include creams with hyaluronic acid.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) - If your skin is dry, prone to inflammation, and frequently dotted with white heads and black heads, you may be lacking essential fatty acids, nutrients that are crucial to the production of skin's natural oil barrier. Without an adequate supply of EFAs, the skin produces a more irritating form of sebum, or oil, which can result in problems.
The solution may be to balance two of the key EFAs, omega-3 and omega-6. While most get plenty of omega-6s (in baked goods, cooking oils, poultry, grains, and many other foods), omega-3s are often lacking. They're found mostly in cold-water fish, including salmon, sardines, and mackerel, flaxseed, and flax and safflower oils. Taking supplements, such as fish oil capsules or evening primrose oil, may also help keep your skin smoother and younger-looking.

**Most health experts agree that most of us don't need to supplement our mineral intake. This is even more true if you drink spring water, which often contains healthful, natural supplies of important minerals. Studies show that washing your face with mineral water can help reduce many common skin irritations, and the mineral content may help some skin cells absorb the moisture better. Happy Friday, everyone!!! I am sure you all are as excited for Friday to be here as I am. Normally, I don't get excited over Fridays, because I work weekends! But this Friday puts me one day closer to vacation - one day closer to being on the beach, soaking up the sun and having tons of fun! Can't wait!

My latest addiction is playing on one of my favorite websites: polyvore. I'm sure most of you have heard of it. It's a great website that offers tons of clothing options for you to put together your own outfits. I love it! Granted, most of the outfits that I have created cost over $1000, but a girl can dream, right? Here's a couple of the outfits I created.

However, since the items on that website are completely out of my price range, I will stick with those from my favorite clothing store in the world - Buckle! I love them! My girl, Cassie, at my local store knows how to hook me up! I can simply go in and tell her what I'm looking for (trendy outfit for girl's night out, something a little dressy for a dinner date, etc) and the next thing I know, I'm in a dressing room with clothes thrown at me! And she is the queen of accessorizing! She will put together the absolute PERFECT outfit in a matter of minutes! From earrings all the way down to shoes! She's unbelievable - she takes the guess work out for me!

I love to go on their website. They have a section of outfits already created that you can just point, click and buy. It's great! Buckle has so much to choose from, that sometimes it's nice just to sit back and say, "You know what, I don't feel like putting stuff together, do it for me!" And voila! Nail Polish Haul for Y'all!

Hi, Beauties! As much as I hate it, the glorious days of summer are coming to an end. Soon, we will be saying good-bye to the hot pinks, bright corals, and fantastics teals & turquoise-colored nails that we have been able to flaunt over the past few months, and hello to the rich golds, browns, and burgundies that define fall. So, I kept that in mind as I was browsing my local Sally's & ULTA stores, searching for new polish. Like I really need any more, right? But they had such gorgeous colors to bring in the fall season that I couldn't resist!

The first color is called Unplugged. It's a very rich brown-bronze sparkly color. Very pretty! Definitely looking forward to wearing this one!

Next up is In Awe of Amber. It looks orange in the picture, but it is actually a golden/bronze color. It kind of reminds me of the Scatterays solar bits from MAC's Style Warriors collection. This color can easily be transitioned from summer to fall. Beautiful!!

This one is one of my favorites! It's called Avalanche, and it is awesome! It's a purple enhanced platinum with a lot of shine!

This one is OPI's You Don't Know Jacques. It's a matte taupe. I'm not quite sure if I'm really feeling this one. I liked it in the store, but now that I look at it at home, I just don't know!

This one is called Black Diamond. It's very similar to OPI's "Baby It's Coal Outside!" The only difference is that this one is not quite as sparkly! I love black/dark polish. Some people think it's a little gothic, but I think is glamorous!

I know this next one isn't a fall type color, but I've been eyeing it for a while. It's Melon of Troy. It's a beautiful shimmery apricot color. Very feminine and pretty!

How in the world I have bypassed this color for so long, I do not know! I mean, look at it! It's called Coconut Kiss. A vibrant shimmery grape color. Another really great transition color!

The whole she-bang! I'm so excited!

On another note, I will be on vacation next week! I'm so excited! I will be heading to the North Carolina eastern coast for a week! So looking forward to sun and relaxation! I will try to have some posts scheduled, but I can't promise. But I will back and posting regularly the following week!

Exfoliation 101: Body Scrubbin'

I don't know of anything I love more than the feel of freshly exfoliated, intensely moisturized skin! There is just something about my skin feeling like a baby's bottom that I crave and it gives me a mental high when I know that I have sloughed away dead skin and all that's left is absolute freshness. Your skin is your biggest feature, so you should make it stand out with a radiant, healthy glow of beauty.

My shower indulgence is The Body Shop's Spa Wisdom Africa Spa Salt Scrub. I have been using this product for years, it is my trusty standby. I have yet to find a scrub that makes my skin tingle and feel as incredible as it does after using this product! I have tried so many, yet I always come back to this one.

Since my skin is normal, I generally exfoliate once a week. (Those with more oily skin should exfoliate no more than twice a week. We don't want to overdo it - the benefit is no greater!) I really try to make it a weekly thing for me during the summer, due to the excess perspiration and oil production, which leads to a speedier accumulation of dead cells. Ewww, I know! However, like the rest of you out there, I have a busy life and sometimes a quick shower is all I have time for! Therefore my exfoliation regime consists of a few variations!

#1: If I'm in a super hurry, I will throw on a pair of bath gloves and lather up with Dove soap, using gentle circular motions. I prefer Dove because it is moisturizes as it cleans. I like The Body Shop's Bath Gloves - mainly because I love the color selection. I'm partial to orange - it's bright and cheerful and makes me happy! LOL!

#2: My typical weekly routine - After washing with soap, I use my Spa Wisdom Africa Spa Salt Scrub. I just use my bare hands for this because the scrub contains enough exfoliants to do the job.

#3: If it has been two weeks or more since I exfoliated or if I have been really active (a.k.a. sweating a lot!) - This is when I get intense! After washing with soap, I will use the bath gloves along with the scrub to really get the nasties off. Be careful not to be too harsh! These two together are quite a duo and you do not want to be too abrasive with your skin.

After each exfoliation, I follow with a deep moisturizer. My fave for the summer is The Body Shop's Coconut Body Butter. It is so rich and creamy and feels like silk! My skin soaks it up and feels absolutely amazing afterwards. Plus, the scent is to die for! It doesn't have the strong, overwhelming smell that some products have, especially those that are supposed to smell like coconut. It's a very light, clean, fresh, coconut smell. It's heavenly, I tell ya!

Finish this off with my favorite comfies, a glass of red wine, and a great movie and I'm a happy chic!

Hi, beauties! This week's nail color is Yoga-Ta Get This Blue - a slammin' deep, rich dark blue. I love this color! It's from the India Collection (Spring/Summer 2008). I love to wear it when I have a tan! My tan skin and this blue just seem to compliment each other - therefore, I don't use this color in the winter AT ALL! It just makes my skin look that much whiter - not pretty!!

My new love!

Ok, rarely do I find a styling tool that works for my hair. I have a lot of hair, but it is very fine and silky - not unlike a five-year-old child's hair. It is nearly impossible to find a tool that will actually do something to it! Hot rollers are a waste of time and the curls of a curling iron generally fall out within a couple of hours! But this product is a God-send!

Oatmeal Facial Mask Recipe

Hey everyone! This is the recipe for the oatmeal mask that I use on a weekly basis. It is very simple!!! I mean, VERY simple! It works perfect for my dry skin - not overdrying at all and my face feels amazing afterwards! Hope you all enjoy!

1 ripe banana

1 cup of oatmeal

milk (as required)

Mash the ripe banana, add the cup of oatmeal to it, and mix well. Add enough milk to create a paste. Apply the oatmeal and banana paste to the face and leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off.
**Extra refreshing tip: While your facial mask is setting, place cucumber slices or even cotton balls soaked in cold water over your eyes. It will do wonders for puffiness! Put on relaxing music, sit back and enjoy!

Nighttime Skin Care Routine

Hey, all! As a follow up to my morning skin care routine, this is the routine that I follow every evening. This routine includes exfoliation and intense moisturizing...this lets my skin really soak in and "repair" from the day's damage while I sleep. Prior to doing anything, I always remove my eye makeup with makeup remover and cotton balls. I'm not particular about my makeup remover - I generally use the generic brand from Target. I do prefer the oil-free type...it's not nearly as greasy-feeling! Here is the rest of the routine...

1. Washing my face, again using my Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser. I like to use a facial sponge (like a Buff-Puff) as a light exfoliator with my cleanser in the evenings. This removes any additional makeup and extra dead skin cells and allows for rejuvenation as I sleep! My skin feels all nice and tingly afterwards!

2. Apply my Neutrogena Clear Pore Astringent. Just as in the mornings!

3. Focus on my under eye area! At night, I use three products on my undereye area. I make sure to pat (never rub) the product in under the eye as well as the lid and outer corners. I use...

As you can probably tell, I love Garnier Nutritioniste products! They are very affordable and are great for my sensitive skin! Love, love, love them!!!

My Morning Skin Care Routine

Good morning everyone! I am actually updating this blog from work....Shhh! Don't tell anybody! I'm supposed to be working! :)
I have gotten some questions regarding my skin care, so I thought I would give you guys a break down of my morning skin care routine. Very simple and basic and the products I use are very affordable and work well! I have very sensitive skin and several products that I have used either dry my skin terribly or cause me to break out. So, here we go:

1. I always use a very gentle cleanser on my skin. I need something very simple, but I still want my skin to feel cleansed. I really like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. It has a wonderful creamy consistency, which feels amazing.

2. After patting my face with a towel, but while it is still slightly damp, I use Neutrogena Clear Pore Oil Eliminating Astringent on a cotton ball and cover my entire face - focusing on my chin, my hairline, and the corners of my nose. My face feels incredible after using this...slightly tighter and rejuvenated! The only downfall to this product is the scent - it's very strong! So be careful when going around the nose if you're sensitive to alcohol scented astringents!

3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! I cannot stress how important this step is! Retaining your skin's moisture is key in fighting early wrinkles! My favorite under eye cream is Garnier Nutritioniste Anti-Wrinkle Firming Eye Cream. It is so rich and creamy! I keep it stored in the refrigerator, which keeps the product cool to help decrease puffiness as well! I just dot it under my eyes, focusing on the inner portion and outer (where the Crow's feet show up), as well as the lid and just dab it with my ring finger until it dries I never rub it in! The skin in the eye area is very thin and delicate - we don't want to pull the skin. We're trying to fight wrinkles, remember, not promote them! :)

4. Last step - facial moisturizing! Another product I love is Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture. All I need is one pump for my entire face! I try to apply this while my face is dry yet still feels supple. It will hold the moisture better if it is allowed to "dry into" the skin instead of just applied on top.

Hope this answers some questions for you! I will follow up with my nighttime routine, which varies slightly from the daytime routine. Until then, I have to get back to work! Unfortunately, I don't get paid to blog! :)

Haul For Y'all!

So, I checked out this discount beauty supply store that I found in Raleigh. I can't believe that I hadn't found it sooner! They had a great selection of Ardell lashes (big love!) as well as OPI nail polishes. I picked up a few lashes, since they had them for less than $3!!!
Then I headed on over to the mall for a few goodies from the MAC counter. I didn't want to get much, since the Sugarsweet line is coming out later this week. So, I picked up Swimming, Juxt, Shale and Aquadisiac eyeshadows and Fascinating eye kohl liner, which is a beautiful bright white liner. I'm anxious to use this! I've heard great reviews on it. If used on the waterline, it opens the eye and gives this "wide awake" look - and I'm all about that! :) Here are some pics for ya! I apologize for the blurriness of some of them!

On a completely different note, I am beginning this fast called the Master Cleanse. I'm sure many of you out there have heard of it. It is a detox fast used to cleanse the colon and GI tract of toxins and give your body a rejuvinating pick me up. So, tonight I had to drink this laxative tea before I go to bed...it was nasty! Then first thing in the morning, I have to drink this sea saltwater flush. The rest of the day consists of drinking this concotion of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water in addition to a bazillion ounces of water! I will be waterlogged! LOL!! This can be done for 10-40 days. I'm starting out with 10 because I think I would go crazy if I had to go any longer without actual food! I will keep you guys posted on the progress!

Well, now that I've guzzled my nasty tea, I am off to bed! Until later!
